Okay, this review is a tad late, especially since Spidey 3 has been out in the theaters for almost a month now. Spidey 3...where to begin...Sam Raimi...you're still da man. You didn't disappoint, dude! Okay, a TAD long. You could have cut out the Sandman character entirely and not missed a beat. Which might have been a good idea because with the Sandman, Venom and Goblin 2 the rogues gallery was pretty crowded up there on screen. MY OPINION: When Sam started Spidey 3 he wanted just the Sandman and Goblin, but the producers (manly toy biz bigshot Ari Arad) wanted Venom because "the kids" loved him, not the 40-year old farts that loved Spidey since he debuted in 1963. Sam R. definitely falls under that category of an early Spidey geek, hence the reason he wanted a 1960s villain like the Sandman. I do have to say that Venom/Eddie Brock did make a more interesting villain (kudos to Topher Grace for a great performance as Brock! He is a comics geek as well!) The Gwen Stacy/Mary Jane rivalry was interesting but totally created for the film. Gwen Stacy was nothing like that in the comics. In the comics she was the "good girl" to Mary Jane's "bad girl" (is it any wonder why Marvel killed off Gwen so Peter could be with bad girl MJ???) Bryce Dallas Howard looked so much like Gwen of the comics that is was almost frightening. If and when there is a 4 they have to bring her back. All in all I really loved the movie, and I don't why the critics were so harsh on it. It was a tad darker than 1 or 2, but I don't think that was a bad thing. The franchaise is holding up. I just hope it survives through #4. And next time, Sam, don't cram it full of villains, this is not a Batman movie! :-)

Urgh, I just have to tell everyone that "Pirates 3" is a stinking pile of poo--and you can quote me! That's three hours of my life I will never get back again! I just don't get why everyone loves this series so much. Okay, Johnny Depp is a great character actor and he created a great character in movie one, but for God's sake, Disney, can you give us a plot?? Something??? Oy vey. I would walk out of that movie on an airplane, to quote Thurston Howell, the third. Don't waste your pirate's booty on this stinky. Go see Spidey 3 again, or better yet, wait two weeks until Fantastic Four 2 comes out, but I'm sure that will stink, too (the first one was God awful! They really screwed up Doctor Doom's character!) The Surfer does look very cool, but you can't bet the whole movie is going to be good on just one silver dude flying around on a giant skateboard. You may laugh at this, but Transformers may be the movie to beat this summer. Mark my words! Or laugh at me when the movie comes out and tanks (but that ain't gonna happen!)

Captain America (Steve Rogers) B. 1941 D. 2007

What the f***??? WHY, WHY, WHY did Marvel decide, after 60 some years, to kill off one of its biggest comic book characters?? Captain America was more than a comic book character, he was an icon. Much like Superman, he is as American as, well, Captain America. Captain America has been around my whole life; as a kid I read the comics, I had the t-shirt, the lunch box, the action figures. And now, poof, he's gone. I feel like a dear old friend is dead. Of course in comics a character can never really "die". They killed Superman in 1994, but being an alien it was easy to invent a way to bring him back. Captain America is not an alien or superhuman. He was a skinny geek that wanted to fight the Nazis. I guess with the Iraq war and the war on terrorism Cap was like a white hat cowboy in an old western: too passe, too quaint, too un-PC for the 21st century comics. In an age where heroes blow away their enemies (Punisher) or tear them to shreds (Wolverine) Cap was always a class act. Marvel will probably find a way to "reinvent" the character by letting some other guy (probably ethnic) wear the shield, but to me Captain America will always be a skinny white kid from Brooklyn who kept his audience enthralled for sixty years. At least I still have the comics--and the lunchbox :-)

Okay, so I saw the latest Marvel character to hit the screen today. "Ghost Rider", starring Nicholas Cage and Eva Mendes. The good news is that it's not a total crapfest like The Punisher or Elecktra. The look of the movie was truly stunning. Mark Steven Johnson finally redeems himself for that Daredevil fiasco of 2003. The plot was pretty wafer thin, but then again Ghost Rider was never an A-list Marvel character, more like an offbeat "is he bad or is he good" character created in the 1970's when comics were just beginning to discover the anti-hero. Ghost Rider came to life just before the creation of Wolverine or The Punisher and before Frank Miller turned Batman into a three-dimensional character in "Batman: Year One." Nicholas Cage, as Blaze/GH, turns in a good performance, though sometimes he slipped in and out of an Elvis "how ya doin'" accent that only proved what a truly horrible Superman he would have been in the Tim Burton version (THANK GOD that movie was never made!) A special oscar should go to Eva Mendes' blouse button for holding those puppies in. As Sting would say: "Roxanne! Roxanne, oh yeah!" She is pure eye candy and if they ever make a movie on the life of Rita Hayworth, Mendes is the one to play her. Wes Bentley, the "bag boy" from American Beauty, gave a so-so performance as the son of Satan. Peter Fonda was underused as the "Big D". All in all, Ghost Rider is a nice ride, a little bumpy at times, but worth the gas money. Now let's see where it stands on the Marvel movie list, from best to worst:

1. Spider-Man 2 (THE BEST)

2. Spider-Man 1

3. X-men 1

4. X-men 2

5. X-men 3

6. Blade 2

7. Ghost Rider

8. Blade 1

9. Fantastic Four

10. Blade 3

11. Daredevil

12. The Punisher

13. The Hulk

14. Electra (THE WORST)
